FIELD: chemistry.;SUBSTANCE: invention relates to a process for the preparation of poly{N,N-bis[N',N'-bis(carboxymethyl)-1-amino-2-hydroxy-3-propyl]aminoethyl}acrylamide fiber, which has sorption properties and can be used at metallurgical, mining and electrochemical industries for the separation of heavy metals from solutions of polyelectrolytes, including wastewater. Method for producing the above fiber is that the ethylenediamine aminated polyacrylonitrile fiber is pre-dried and swollen in deionized water. Then it is introduced into an alkaline solution of 1-amino-2-hydroxy-3-chloropropane-N,N-diacetic acid. Weight ratio of 1-amino-2-hydroxy-3-chloropropane-N,N-diacetic acid to the ethylenediamine aminated polyacrylonitrile fiber is 1:1. Reaction mixture is stirred at a temperature of 55–65 °C at pH 9.0–9.5. Reaction mass is then cooled to 20–25 °C, the precipitate is filtered off and washed with water to neutral pH, then washed with alcohol. Resulting fiber is eluted in a column with 0.1 M hydrochloric acid solution to pH 1.0.
