A method of forming a composite unipolar plate (10) for a fuel cell stack, the method comprising: providing at least one prepreg insert (56), positioning the at least one prepeg insert (56) in a mold (50), such that it is positioned on a manifold region (14) of the molded unipolar plate (10), wherein the manifold region (14) has openings (16-38) defining inlet and outlet manifolds and the at least one prepreg insert (56) is stamped and the shape of the manifold region (14); placing a charge of a bulk molding compound (60) in the mold (50); and compressing the bulk-molding compound charge (60) to form the bulk-molding compound (60) into the shape of the mold (50) and to cure it to the prepeg insert (56).
