A method for generating a specially machined surface on an outer surface (34, 36) of a belt pulley (22) of a continuously variable transmission, wherein the specially machined surface with a belt (40) or with a chain of the continuously variable transmission, said method comprising the steps of:(a) determining a actual specially machined roughness on the outer surface (34, 36), which is necessary to a predetermined friction between the specially machined surface and the belt (40) or of the chain; and(b) laser etching of micro-grooves (58) having in each case identical tip - to - valley - heights in the at least one section of the outer surface (34, 36), in order to produce the specially machined surface, whereby the micro-grooves (58) to a depth are formed, which generates the actual specially machined roughness.
