A method of synthesizing metal nanoparticles comprising: adding a surfactant to a nuclear reagent complex to produce core nanoparticles, wherein the nuclear reagent complex is described by the formula I, M0Kern -Xy I wherein is a zero valence metal wherein X is a hydride molecule and wherein y is a value greater than zero; and adding a surfactant to a shell reagent complex in the presence of core nanoparticles, wherein the shell reagent complex is represented by the formula II, M0 shell -X'y II, wherein a zerovalent metal having an atomic number different from that of X 'is a hydride molecule which may have the same identity or an identity other than X, and where y is greater than zero.
