The invention relates to a method for carrying out a welding operation for welding a welding element (1) to a carrier element according to the principle of the arc ignition using a, by generating a magnetic field moving arc. In this case, the welding element (1) has a welding region (3) which comprises an annular edge region (4) and a core region (5) bounded by the edge region (4) and structurally delimited and raised relative to the edge region (4). The method comprises the following steps: (i) generating the arc between the core region (5) and the carrier element, (ii) melting at least a predominant part of the core region (5), (iii) moving the arc with the aid of the magnetic field to the edge region (6) and (iv) melting at least a part of the edge region (6). The core region (5) is particularly suitable as a source of melt material. Thus, it can be achieved that the welded joint is produced using a particularly small amount of melt. As a result, the welding process can be carried out with a particularly low welding current. In addition, it can be achieved thereby that no score is formed between the welding element (1) and the solidified melting material.
