The invention relates to a method for proactively adjusting a vehicle distance between an ego vehicle and a preceding vehicle, the method comprising: determining a first vehicle distance between the ego vehicle and the preceding vehicle by a control unit of the ego vehicle, wherein the controller the first vehicle distance between the ego vehicle and a preceding vehicle determined by means of a sensor system of the ego vehicle; Determining, by the controller of the ego vehicle, a second vehicle distance between the preceding vehicle and another preceding vehicle, the controller determining the second vehicle spacing as the distance between the image of the preceding vehicle and an image of the further preceding vehicle by the image capture device of the ego vehicle; Calculating, by the controller of the ego vehicle, a change in the second vehicle distance compared to an earlier, second vehicle distance; and adjusting, by the control unit of the ego vehicle, the vehicle distance between the ego vehicle and the preceding vehicle in response to the change of the second vehicle distance.
