A person detection system is provided for detecting the presence of a person using airflow. A sensor unit 101, which has a sensor plane 102, is arranged in a user room 10, in which an air flow is generated by the movement of a person. A heat generating element 121 disposed on the sensor plane locally heats the air in the user room. A pair of first temperature sensor elements 103a and 103 are arranged in a first direction of the sensor plane and sandwich the heat generating element, and a pair of second temperature sensor elements 105c and 105d are arranged in a second direction of the sensor plane and enclose the heat generating element. As a person 11 moves, an airflow 51 is created causing a change in the temperature of the heated air. The air flow 51 extends to the sensor plane 102 from any direction. A detection signal indicative of the presence of a person is generated from a temperature difference detected by the pair of first temperature sensor elements and a temperature difference detected by the pair of second temperature sensor elements.
