Electrochemical devices and methods of making the same include an anode with magnesium, a cathode, and an electrolyte in contact with the anode and the cathode. The electrolyte contains a carboranylmagnesium salt and an ether solvent mixture in which the carboranylmagnesium salt is dissolved. The ether solvent mixture contains a first ethereal solvent and a second ethereal solvent which is different from the first ethereal solvent.
