Safely transporting data over a unidirectional data diode connecting a process plant to a remote system includes providing, using a link key material, a transmitter at the plant end of the diode with a far end receiver. The shortcut key material is used to securely share a network key material used to encrypt / decrypt messages or packets that are transported across the diode and whose payload contains asset updated or newly created generated data. The shared network material periodically uses the link key material and the recurrence interval may be based on a lost data tolerance or other property of an application, service or consumer of system data at the remote system.
