The invention relates to an airbag system (10) for a vehicle having a first (1) and second airbag (2) which, in the intended main support direction (11), is largely located above the first airbag (1). Both airbags are timed. In the airbag system (10) both airbags may have a separate gas supply and effectively cooperate to provide a larger volume of airbag without substantial loss of time. When both airbags are activated, the second airbag (2) largely unfolds on the surface (5) of the first airbag. Due to the separate gas supply both airbags can be triggered simultaneously and independently. It is also possible that only the second airbag (2) is triggered and the first airbag (1) remains inactive. The airbag system (10) thus covers a wider range of load cases. It helps to give the vehicle occupants more freedom in choosing their seating positions.
