A variable pitch hinge for use with hinged housings includes a first shaft coupled to a first variable diameter device and a second shaft coupled to a second variable diameter device. The first variable diameter device and the second variable diameter device are coupled together using a non-elastic element. As the shafts are rotated in a first direction, the diameter of the variable diameter devices increases. When the waves are rotated in a second direction opposite to the first direction, the diameter of the variable diameter devices decreases. As the diameter of the variable diameter devices increases, the non-elastic element applies a compressive force to the variable diameter devices, thereby reducing the spacing (ie, the pitch) between the shafts. As the diameter of the variable diameter devices decreases, the non-elastic element relaxes the pressing force on the variable diameter devices, thereby increasing the distance between the shafts.
