The present invention relates to a system for estimating a distance at which is located a pedestrian with respect to a motor vehicle, from the processing of images sensed by a camera on board, said system comprising a first detector (5) for recognizing shapes by learning is capable of delivering, from an image captured, at least one first bounding box (52) representative of a detection of a pedestrian to a first scale of the image, and the estimation means adapted to estimate the distance between the pedestrian detected from the position of a lower limit (53) of the first bounding box (52).
