The present invention relates to a method of adjusting the pitch of the turns (22) of a metal carcass (12), and an installation of implementation. The method comprises the following steps: a) providing a metal carcass (12) having turns (22), said carcass being extendable longitudinally between a minimum pitch and a maximum pitch of said turns; b) translating said metal carcass (12) in translation from an upstream zone (16) to a downstream zone (20); c) the turns (22) are successively carried at a given pitch; and, d) maintaining said turns (22) at said given pitch in said downstream zone (20). Also in step b) said turns (22) are held at a predetermined pitch; and in step c) the said turns (22) are released so as to be able to drive them in translation in the said downstream zone (16) at a speed differentiated from the translation drive speed.
