The invention relates to a method for correcting a deficit of ammonia stored in a catalyst of a system (4) for selective catalytic reduction in an exhaust line (5) of a thermal engine (1). a motor vehicle, an ammonia feedstock being added to the catalyst according to an ammonia loading instruction, the deficiency being due to a failure to detect a decrease of a temperature (T3 to T5) in the line (5) of exhaust system upstream (4) and a late update of the ammonia loading setpoint. It is compared, on the one hand, an absolute value of a temperature gradient upstream of the system (4) with a first gradient threshold and, on the other hand, the temperature (T3 to T5) upstream before the decrease. with a second temperature threshold (T3 to T5). When the first and second thresholds are exceeded, it is carried out an anticipated increase of the loading setpoint.
