A push button box for a pedestrian crossing

A push button box for use at the nearside of a signal controlled pedestrian crossing comprises a housing 2, a tactile indicator device 8 which comprises a tactile element 7 that is located outside of the housing. An electric actuator 12 is fixed to the tactile indicator 7 and a drive circuit 16, 17 applies drive signals to the actuator 12. The actuator 12 vibrates in turn causing the tactile element 7 to generate a vibrating alert signal. The tactile indicator device 8 includes a stem 6 which extends from the tactile element 7 through an opening in the housing 2 to project into the inside of the housing 2, in which the stem 6 has a hollow region 14 and the actuator is fixed within the hollow stem 6. The actuator 12 may be an electric motor which may have an eccentric mass which rotates and causes a generation upon application of a drive signal. The tactile element 7 may be driven to vibrate with a defined haptic signature, more specifically a signature to create the sensation of the element 7 continuously rotating around an axis. The tactile element 7 may comprise a frusto-conical cone arranged to extend vertically downwards. Further disclosed is a conical tactile indicator apparatus for a pedestrian crossing push button box.
