A system for inductive power transfer for electrically powering a vehicle includes a secondary unit 1 having a means for executing at least one generic (i.e. non vehicle-specific) function. Execution of the generic function is controllable by at least one vehicle-specific state management means 13. The generic function may particularly be a charging control function, a communication control function, a positioning control function or a safety function. The generic functions may be software or hardware functions. The state management means may be a processing unit e.g. a microcontroller. A primary unit of the inductive power system may comprise a generic state management unit means to control the execution of generic functions. The vehicle may be a track bound vehicle or a road automobile.
