A behaviour of at least one passenger (9) is determined continuously by a detection device or sensor (7) of a vehicle (8) for operating a building automation system (1) for a house, home, office or other building. The detection device transmits passenger data to a device (6) which uses the data to control device (2) of a building (3), such as a heater, air conditioner or HVAC. An average stay duration of a passenger in the building may be determined according to their arrival time. The passenger behaviour may be determined based on conditions inside (10) the vehicle, such as the temperature, light conditions, humidity or atmosphere. The passenger data may describe the number or behaviour of passengers. The control device may assign one or more rooms (4) in the building to a passenger, and the passenger data may be used to control a functional device assigned to those rooms.
