The present invention relates to a composition for preventing, ameliorating, or treating stress or depression comprising medicinal herb extract as an effective ingredient. Specifically, it is shown that an extract of Hibiscus syriacus flower and an extract of Hibiscus syriacus root have an activity of protecting nerve cells, can lower the expression level of an inflammatory factor, which is increased by stress, and is effective for depression caused by stress.
