CHUNK HEADER INCORPORATING BINARY FLAGS AND CORRELATED VARIABLE-LENGTH FIELDS

A method of playing back content by a playback device is provided. The playback device downloads a portion of a media file, which has content data including encoded video frames and a plurality of headers. In at least one of the headers an extension flag indicates whether additional flags are included in the header; these additional flags comprise a frame metadata flag that indicates the presence of frame metadata within the data fields of the header. A frame of encoded video is decoded, by decoding the at least one headers to identify the flags, the additional flags, and the content of the data fields and decoding the frame of encoded video based upon a set of pre-defined presentation rules that define the behavior of the playback device based upon the frame metadata, enabling the playback device to display the frame thus decoded on a display.
