The invention relates to a method and a control system for automatically controlling a production system (1) and to a classification agent (A) and to a calculation unit (P). The control system comprises: - a system (S) for acquiring sensor data during operation of the production system (1), - a classification agent (A) which is designed to preprocess the acquired sensor data for the purpose of classification in order to calculate desired process points as a processing window for error-free operation of the production system (1), - a calculation unit (P) which is used to determine a setting data record as a reference variable for the production system (1), wherein the calculation unit (P) accesses a simulation module (SIM) which is intended to carry out a simulation on the basis of the calculated desired process points. In the simulation model, associated process values are calculated and are compared with the particular previously calculated desired process point, and the reference variables are gradually improved until the calculated associated process points are in the processing window and are close to the calculated desired process point.
