A method of operating a user equipment (UE) is provided comprising: receiving a first user input requesting the UE to attempt set-up of a given group communication session to a given communication group; transmitting, responsive to the first user input, a call request message to an application server to request set-up of the given group communication session with the given communication group; receiving a second user input requesting the UE to monitor for gestures by a user of the UE during the given group communication session; and monitoring, during the given group communication session and responsive to the second user input, one or more sensors of the UE in order to detect whether the user of the UE has made a given predefined gesture that is mapped to a gesture-based command to be executed in association with the given group communication session.
