To provide an engine starter and an engine starting method of the engine starter to improve the engine startability while avoiding that the vehicle body starts moving rearward by the turn of the clutch due to the viscosity of lube oil.SOLUTION: In an engine starter 10, in a state where a clutch 69 is released and when an engine temperature is a prescribed temperature or higher, an engine start control part 80 executes a swing-back start control in which an ACG starter 47 is driven to rotate the crank shaft 37 in a reverse direction and then rotate it in a normal direction to start an engine 23. When the engine temperature is lower than the prescribed temperature, the engine start control part executes a swing-back-less start control in which the ACG starter 47 is driven to rotate the crank shaft 37 in the normal direction without rotating it in the reverse direction to start the engine 23.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
