To provide methods for detecting cancer related genes or molecular aberrations in biological samples derived from organisms.SOLUTION: For example, chromosomal region imbalances due to deletion and/or amplification in a tumor are identified by analyzing biological samples containing DNA fragments that do not contain cells. Multiple loci are used for each chromosomal region. The method can subsequently diagnose (screen) the cancer in a patient using such imbalances, and can predict a cancer patient, or detect the presence of premalignant conditions in a patient, or monitor progression.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 10
