BRIEF SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION A lap shear testing device and method of use for testing the performance of the weld interface of welded thermoplastic composite parts, such as infrared welded or resistive implant welded or adhesively bonded composite parts. The samples to be tested are provided from mass-produced parts in a typical geometry. The test apparatus has at least two aligned blocks comprising at least two lateral support blocks which operably hold a sample comprising two welded substrates. The test is conducted in compression mode at a crosshead speed of 1 mm / min, until the maximum load generated by the universal tester breaks the weld interface between the two thermoplastic substrates in shear mode.
