To identify the language in speech contents included in a speech signal.SOLUTION: A language identification device calculates, based upon respective results of speech recognition on a speech signal in a plurality of kinds of languages, scores for evaluating the results of speech recognition by the languages, and specifies a language, corresponding to a maximum value, among the scores as a language of spoken contents included in a speech signal. The language identification device calculates, based upon a general score and scores by use, a score for evaluating the result of speech recognition. The general score is a score calculated based upon a general model including information on appearance probability of connections between words of a sentence of a language having been speech-recognized, and evaluating accuracy of the result of speech recognition. The scores by use are scores calculated based upon models by use including information on appearance probability of a word by use, selected out of words appearing in the sentence, spoken in a predetermined scene, of the language having been speech-recognized, and evaluating accuracy of the result of speech recognition.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
