A method for providing information to an HMD is shown. The method comprises defining an active zone within a user's virtual reality (VR) viewing environment as presented through the 3D display of the HMD. The method comprises placing main content within an active zone of a VR viewing environment. The method comprises defining one or more peripheral zones outside the active zone. The method comprises placing secondary content in a first peripheral zone of a VR viewing environment. The method comprises displaying an attractor in the active zone in conjunction with an entry for new data in the secondary content, where the attractor directs the user's attention to the first peripheral zone. The method comprises detecting rotation of the HMD from a first direction directed to the active zone to a second direction directed to the first peripheral zone.
