To provide a manufacturing method for base material for single-core optical fiber that can manufacture a base material for single-core optical fiber which is sectioned in a non-circular shape perpendicularly to a longer direction, and a manufacturing method for single-core optical fiber.SOLUTION: A manufacturing method for base material for single-core optical fiber comprises: a bundling process P1 of bundling a plurality of glass rods each including a core rod 2 having a core part 10R to form a core 10 and a plurality of clad rods 3 arranged in contact with an outer peripheral surface of the core rod and forming parts of a clad 20; an external deposition process P2 of depositing soot 5 as other parts of the clad on outer peripheral surfaces of the plurality of bundled glass rods; and a sintering process P3 of heating the plurality of glass rods having the soot deposited to form a glass body having the soot and the respective glass rods united, the plurality of clad rods being arranged overlapping the respective apexes of a polygon enclosing the core rod.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 4
