PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a rotor excitation system for a synchronous machine, capable of securely detecting a failure of a rotary rectifier even when the synchronous machine has variable speed.SOLUTION: A rotor excitation system for a synchronous machine includes: an excitation device 23 that using a rotary rectifier 19, rectifies AC power generated by an exciter rotor 27 rotating and receiving a magnetic field from an exciter stator 28, the exciter rotor being coaxial with a rotary shaft of a synchronous machine 11, and outputs the rectified AC power to a magnetic field winding 20 of the synchronous machine 11 to perform excitation; a detection winding 14 provided for detecting a voltage ripple generated from the rotary rectifier 19; and a failure detection device 25 that receives input of rotation speed information on the synchronous machine 11 from a rotation drive system 24 for the synchronous machine 11, calculates a frequency of the voltage ripple generated by the rotary rectifier 19 by using the rotation speed and a multiple determined from a connection configuration of the rotary rectifier 19, compares the calculated frequency of the voltage ripple with an actual measurement frequency of the voltage ripple generated by the rotary rectifier 19 and derived from the detection winding 14, and detects a failure of the rotary rectifier 19 from a result of the comparison.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
