PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a photocatalytic material that has excellent antiviral ability and antibacterial performance, and resists discoloration due to light irradiation in a use environment, a method for producing the photocatalytic material, an antiviral agent and antibacterial agent containing the photocatalytic material, a photocatalyst coating composition prepared with the photocatalytic material, and a photocatalyst coating body prepared with the photocatalyst coating composition.SOLUTION: A photocatalytic material contains anisotropic particles containing Cu elements, S elements, and O elements, and photoconductive inorganic oxide particles. On each anisotropic particle, arranged are a plurality of linear, streaked steps or grooves in parallel. A method for producing the photocatalytic material includes the steps of: subjecting a suspension containing a divalent copper compound and (preferably) titanium oxide to hydrothermal treatment; and firing a solid content of the suspension subjected to the hydrothermal treatment. The antiviral agent, antibacterial agent and coating composition contain the photocatalytic material.SELECTED DRAWING: None
