A system and method for searching a database using a graphical user interface including a concept stack is disclosed. The method includes enabling a graphical user interface including a query building canvas to be displayed. The graphical user interface includes a concept stack that includes stacked concept nodes associated with query terms combined with a Boolean OR. The concept stacks are linked by an associative proximity connector that combines the query expressions associated with each concept stack. The graphical user interface includes a connector node that includes a graphical representation of an associative proximity connector. The method further includes generating a search query to include a query expression associated with the concept stack linked by the associative proximity connector.
