The present disclosure describes the battery components of a secondary battery and / or a traction battery. Novel solid lithium (Li) conducting electrolytes are described herein, including monolithic, single layer, and bilayer solid sulfide lithium ion (Li ⁺ ) conducting catholyte or electrolyte. These solid ion conductors have particular chemical compositions arranged and / or bound by both crystalline and non-crystalline bonding. Also provided herein are methods of making these solid sulfide-based lithium ion conductors, including new annealing methods.
