In an elevator guide rail machining method, machining is performed on a guide rail having a braking surface with which an emergency stop device is in contact with when the elevator is in an emergency stop, with the guide rail installed in the hoistway. In addition, a guide rail processing device having a processing tool for scraping at least a part of the braking surface is suspended in the hoistway through a flexible suspension member, and the braking surface is processed by the processing tool.
