In this elevator guide rail machining method, a guide rail having a braking surface with which an emergency stop device comes into contact when an elevating body makes an emergency stop is machined while the guide rail is being installed in a hoistway. Further, a guide rail machining device having a machining tool for scraping off at least a portion of the braking surface is hung in the hoistway via a flexible hanging member, and as the braking surface is machined with the machining tool, the guide rail machining device is moved along the guide rail via the hanging member.
