PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compensator that comprises a biocompatible material and defines a matrix favorable to tissue and cellular ingrowth.SOLUTION: A compensator 33020 can be attachable to an anvil of a fastening instrument. The compensator can have a support layer configured to be attached to the anvil, and a scaffold attached to the support layer. The scaffold can have a plurality of scaffold layers comprising a biocompatible material, and a plurality of cavities, where the layers and the cavities can define a matrix favorable to tissue and cellular ingrowth.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 569
