An apparatus, e.g., UE, tunes away from a first RAT to a second RAT during active data transfer between the UE and a network device over the first RAT. The data activity transfer relates to one of an uplink data transfer from the UE or a downlink data transfer to the UE, and tuning away starts a timer that affects the data transfer activity. The UE may initiate a continuance of uplink data transfer upon tuning back to the first RAT by resetting the timer and sending a SR to the network device upon resetting of the at least one timer, wherein the timer is associated with the UE. The UE may initiate a continuance of downlink data transfer upon tuning back to the first RAT by causing the network device to exit a power saving mode, wherein the timer is associated with the network device and defines a cycle of the power saving mode.
