Nonlinear distortion compensators include exponential computations and hence are large in circuit scale. In view of this, a nonlinear distortion compensator of the present invention comprises: a phase calculation means that calculates, on the basis of both a nonlinear compensation factor and the signal intensity of an input signal obtained by photoelectric conversion of a signal light having propagated along a light transmission path, the phase noise caused by self-phase modulation of the signal light; an offset compensation means that outputs an offset compensated phase obtained by subtracting a predetermined offset amount from the phase noise; and a phase compensation means that subjects the input signal to a process of compensating for the phase rotation amount thereof on the basis of the offset compensated phase.
