The low-density gel body of the present disclosure has a coating layer formed on the surface of a polymer of a gas phase polymerizable monomer. The low-density gel body of the present disclosure has improved mechanical strength. Low density gel bodies are, for example, aerogels and xerogels. The low density gel body may be, for example, a monolith body such as a sheet or a particle. The gas phase polymerizable monomer is, for example, at least one selected from olefins, styrene, styrene derivatives, (meth) acrylic acid, (meth) acrylic acid esters, paraxylylene, and paraxylylene derivatives.
