The invention applies to digital video compression according to the h.265 / hevc standard and consists of replacing the exhaustive coding unit size decision process based on rate-distortion optimization by algorithms in the form of decision trees. low complexity, which allow the possibility of coding units to be considered in the process. The invention is composed of three decision tree structure algorithms which are applied individually in the binary decision of partitioning a coding unit into four smaller coding units. The a64x64 algorithm decides whether or not partitioning of a 64x64 coding unit into four 32x32 coding units should be considered in rate-distortion optimization. The a32x32 algorithm decides whether partitioning a 32x32 coding unit into four 16x16 coding units should be considered in rate-distortion optimization. The a16x16 algorithm decides whether or not partitioning a 16x16 coding unit into four 8x8 coding units should be considered in rate-distortion optimization. The attributes of the algorithms are dependent on simple calculations on the coding unit in question and on previously processed coding units.
