ARABITOL PRODUCTION BIOPROCESS FROM SISAL

The present invention relates to a process for the production of arabitol from sisal lignocellulosic biomass produced from the fermentation of sisal hydrolyzed liquor by yeast of the genus candida and debaryomyces. The solutions may be hydrolyzed or partially hydrolyzed prior to fermentation. After fermentation, yeast cells can be separated by various processes, for example centrifugation followed by membrane filtration, ultrafiltration, nanofiltration or microfiltration. The recovered arabitol solution can be crystallized to provide pure arabitol crystals. The product is presented as a source of low calorie sugars with sweetening properties of industrial interest. This compound can provide sweetening and anti-cariogenic properties, assisting in the prevention of caries, and is suitable for people with diabetes.
