The present invention relates to thermal spray coatings and processes on non-smooth surfaces. The coating and processes may coat non-smooth surfaces without substantial degradation of the texture of the underlying surface or the profile of the non-smooth surfaces to sufficiently preserve the texture or profile of the underlying surface. The ability of the fractional covering of the coating to maintain the surface profile while maintaining wear resistance has never before been achieved by conventional thermal spraying processes.
