A nitrate optical sensor has a signal processor or signal processing module configured to: receive signaling that contains information about a dissolved nitrate concentration in water based on a first optical UV absorbance of 229 nm, and which contains information also on a dissolved organic matter (mod) detected in water based on a second associated optical absorbance of UV light in a range from 250 nm to 275 nm; and determining the corresponding signaling containing information on a corrected dissolved nitrate concentration in water by compensating the nitrate concentration for the detected mod in water based on the signaling received.
