a dilator 10 for sheathless access to a patient vessel having a tubular distal member 14 with a chamfered portion 24 at the proximal end and a proximal member 16 with a chamfered portion 26 at the distal end. the respective chamfered portions overlap in a transition region 18 and form a quick-change opening that communicates with the distal element lumen 22. the proximal element and the distal element may be secured to each other with transition tubing 28 which is arranged coaxially over the distal end of the proximal element and extends over the chamfered portion of the distal element within a projected circumference of the distal element.
