The present invention provides a method for the production of chemically derived nanocellulose, comprising the step of (a) contacting a cellulose precursor material with a chemical derivative composition to form a liquid reaction mixture, and (b) chemically reacting the mixture of formed liquid reaction, and (c) subjecting the formed liquid reaction mixture to microfluidization, wherein steps (b) and (c) are performed simultaneously.
