The present invention relates to transcriptional units encoding the pre-membrane (prm) and envelope (e) proteins of the zika virus (zikv), which upon translation of the zica virus-like particles (vlps) are described. The use of transcriptional units and vlps on three different zikv vaccine platforms is described. Detection methods based on zikv vlps immunoassays are described for the diagnosis of zikv infection.
