The present invention discloses the use of torasemide or a combination of torasemide with a second compound for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease or an Alzheimer's disease related disorder or spinal cord injury and for protecting cortical neurons or brain endothelial cells against Aβ_1-42 peptide toxicity. The invention further discloses the use of torasemide or a combination of torasemide with a second compound for the preparation of a medicament for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease or an Alzheimer's disease related disorder or spinal cord injury and for the preparation of a medicament for protecting cortical neurons or brain endothelial cells against Aβ_1-42 peptide toxicity. The invention also discloses a method for the treatment of Alzheimer's disease or an Alzheimer's disease related disorder or spinal cord injury comprising administering torasemide or a combination of torasemide with a second compound to a subject.
