A method for determining the species origin(s) of DNA in a sample comprising conducting metagenomic sequence analysis of the sample to identify DNA from at least one species, followed by species specific quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) to amplify and quantify a species specific target from the identified species DNA.
