The present disclosure is related to an emotion recognition system to evaluate human emotional behavior, from the communication of a talker. Comprises a processing system configured to receive representative communication signals to identify the characteristics of a signal from a group of received signals. The processing system is configured to implement at least one intermediate mapping between the characteristics of a signal and one or more elements of an emotional ontology to make an emotion recognition decision, providing a gradient representation of emotional behavior. In such a system, the elements of the emotional ontology comprise at least one expressive variable, groups of expressive variables, and relationships between the clusters, while the characteristics of the signal include verbal or nonverbal signals of expressive behavior.
