A process for converting coal into synthesis gas and by-products, such as for instance tar and oil, wherein the coal is separated into a coarse and a fine fraction, the coarse fraction is processed in a fixed-bed pressure gasification, the fine fraction is processed in a pyrolysis, and the respectively obtained products containing tar, oil and naphtha are combined and mixed.
