A transmission network (14) for communicating information at directional radio frequencies to fixed, ambulatory or mobile recievers. The network includes a broadband network servicing a first area, and including a plurality of first and second transmitters (2, 10), the direction of transmission of each first and second transmitter lying substantially parallel to a first geographical axis, and a broadcast network servicing a second area substantially overlaying the first area, and including a plurality of fifth and sixth transmitters (34, 38), the direction of transmission of each fifth and sixth transmitter lying substantially parallel to a second geographical axis, the second axis being orthogonal to the first axis. The broadband network transmits in a first frequency band, and a broadcast network transmits in a second frequency band, the first frequency band being substantially the same as the second frequency band. The transmission network includes micro-cells for covering particular areas within the transmission network not covered by the first, second, third or fourth transmitters, the micro-cells being further divided into pico-cells in which the directional transmissions are relayed at frequencies lower than those used by the first, second, third and fourth transmitters. The first and second transmitters transmit at any one of a first, second, third or fourth frequency, the first, second, third and fourth frequencies being generated by LHCP and RHCP polarisation of a first frequency and a second frequency.
