The present utility model relates to a nitrogen doped bismuth oxide-bismuth oxychloride photocatalyst used to decolorize water contaminated with methylene blue under UV light irradiation. The nitrogen doped Bismuth oxide-bismuth oxychloride photocatalyst is comprised of hydrothermally treated 1 mmol Bi(NO3)3, 1 mmol KCl and a nitrogen precursor with a 1:5 (N:Bi) molar ratio wherein the nitrogen precursor is selected from the group of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid, urea and ammonium hydroxide.
